Dear Letters Editor,

Washington's real estate excise tax is already the second highest in the nation. In spite of this, some legislators could propose increasing the home tax to fill a $3.2 billion hole in the state budget. That would be clearly an unreasonable and untenable policy proposal given the already-high state of this tax and the state of our struggling economy and housing market.

Any proposed tax increase on homes would take thousands of dollars out of homeowners' pocket when they sell their home. This home tax chips away at the equity homeowners have struggled for years to build. Real estate taxes double-tax property owners who have paid property taxes each year and then must pay thousands of dollars more when selling their home. Homeowners shouldn't be taxed again for infrastructure they're already paying for with another tax on property.

Legislators should soundly reject any real estate tax increase to fix the state deficit.

Sincerely,
